After 14 years on the mainland, Hein returns to the village of his childhood on an island in the North Sea. But the community does not recognise him. Even his former closest friend Friedemann keeps his distance. The villagers convene a village court. It is to clarify whether Hein is really who he claims to be. In the course of the trial, doubts, contradictions and mistrust grow. The film tells of belonging, repressed pasts and personal memories. At the same time, it poses the question of what remains for a person when even their own origins seem uncertain.
