In Herzsprung, a small town in north-east Germany shortly after reunification, everything begins to totter: the Russian soldiers leave, businesses close, jobs disappear. Johanna also loses her footing. While her husband is broken by the new reality, her father and her friend go their own ways, she falls in love with a strange, dark-skinned man. But in an atmosphere of growing hopelessness, possessiveness and xenophobia, the violence escalates - until love, which actually promises a new beginning, ends in a deadly catastrophe.
