In the East – Stories from the Special Zone
A play by Anja Panse
The Triple A Theatre from Potsdam once again invites you to this extraordinary production, which sheds light on the division of Germany and its aftermath in a biting, humorous way.
In this gripping play, four people from East and West meet at a campsite on a warm summer’s evening for a barbecue.
Whilst grilled sausages from Thuringia, Bautz’ner mustard and beer create a lively atmosphere, the mood takes a turn for the worse when an unexpected remark shocks the group:
‘You colonised us in 1990, didn’t you!’ Suddenly, an emotional storm of opinions, hurt feelings and old wounds erupts.
‘IM OSTEN’ is based on personally researched life stories from East Germany and spans a dramatic arc from 1989 to the present day.
With plenty of humour, a pinch of provocation and a live medley of East German classics, the play invites the audience to re-examine the post-reunification era and reclaim the right to interpret their own history.
A theatre evening that provokes thought but also makes you laugh – a fascinating exploration of identity, memory and community.
