Candide grows up sheltered in his uncle's Westphalian castle. Taught by his teacher Pangloss, he firmly believes that everything in the world has a good reason. But when he is chased away because of a love affair with the Baroness Kunigunde, a painful odyssey begins.

A journey through the human abyss Candide is confronted with brutal reality across several continents: He survives wars, natural disasters and the cruelties of slavery. Despite all his ordeals, he repeatedly encounters his teacher Pangloss, who clings to his absurd optimism even in the most adverse moments.
