Good manners, homemade elderberry wine and a corpse in a chest: what is surely the most murderous comedy in theatre history is coming to Görlitz!
Look forward to an evening at the theatre brimming with delightful wordplay, situational comedy and wonderfully eccentric characters. The Gerhart Hauptmann Theatre is staging Joseph Kesselring’s world-famous crime comedy *Arsenic and Old Lace* at the Großes Haus in Görlitz.
At the centre of the story are the two charming elderly ladies, Abby and Martha Brewster. In their neighbourhood, they are regarded as the very embodiment of helpfulness – always caring, pious and devoted to the welfare of lonely souls. Yet behind their respectable façade lies a macabre secret: To ‘deliver’ lonely elderly gentlemen from the sufferings of the world, the sisters take great pleasure in serving them homemade elderberry wine, spiked with a hefty dose of arsenic, strychnine and cyanide.
When their nephew Mortimer – a respected theatre critic – discovers the terrible secret hidden in the chest bench, utter chaos ensues. As if the situation weren’t already mad enough, their brother Jonathan, who is wanted by the police, also turns up...
An unforgettable evening at the theatre:
- An absolute cult classic: a brilliantly constructed game of confusion that has had audiences worldwide in fits of laughter for generations.
- A first-class ensemble: With brilliant timing and great enthusiasm, the GHT’s acting ensemble demonstrates just how enchanting pitch-black humour can be.
Don’t miss this spectacular start to the new theatre season and experience the finest British humour in the heart of Görlitz!
