Practical workshop on building bird nesting boxes
Practical workshop: Building bird nesting boxes - your contribution to species conservation
Many native bird species are finding it increasingly difficult to find suitable nesting sites. Old trees with natural cavities are increasingly disappearing from our landscape, and modern construction methods mean that buildings offer fewer and fewer opportunities for nesting. By building bird nesting boxes, we can compensate for this loss and make an important contribution to protecting our native birdlife.
In our practical workshop, participants have the opportunity to get active themselves: Under the expert guidance of ornithologist Dr Markus Ritz, both cavity boxes and half-cavity boxes will be built. These different types of nesting boxes provide suitable nesting sites for various bird species - from tits and nuthatches to robins and wagtails. If desired, however, other construction methods can also be realised; we will see this spontaneously on the workshop day and are equipped with corresponding construction instructions.
In addition to practical tips on building nesting boxes, Markus Ritz will provide exciting background knowledge on breeding behaviour, habitats and the challenges faced by many bird species today.
The workshop thus combines practical craftsmanship with in-depth specialist knowledge - and shows how you can make an effective contribution to nature conservation with simple means.
Building materials are included in the free workshop and can be provided thanks to funding from the European Social Fund.
