Hans Bollinger is a pioneer of folk music in Germany. Over 50 years ago, he and his band ESPE had a decisive influence on the folk scene. After decades, Hans Bollinger is setting out once more. Together with his son Daniel (solo clarinettist with the Badische Staatskapelle), he explores songs from a lost – no: destroyed – world. On their tour of Germany, Hans and Daniel Bollinger will be performing at selected, special venues. On 29 October at the Kulturforum Görlitzer Synagogue.

Father and son bring with them songs that span the spectrum from the Jewish shtetls of Eastern Europe to the songs of the ‘Bund’ from the time of expulsion, songs from the ghettos, songs of partisans and the resistance, and songs from the ‘New World’. The programme features songs by the great composers of Yiddish songs, such as Mordechaj Gebirtig, Itzig Manger, Mark Warshawski, Hirsh Glik and Jizchag Kazenelson.

The artists

Hans Bollinger, born in 1949, was a co-founder and leader of the music group ESPE, which performed nationally and internationally from 1976 to 1993 and released numerous records and CDs. ESPE performed traditional Yiddish songs and composed new songs in the Yiddish language.

Daniel Bollinger, born in Saarbrücken in 1979, has been principal clarinettist with the BADISCHE STAATSKAPELLE since the 2002/2003 season. From an early age, he won prizes at numerous competitions. He regularly appears as a guest musician with orchestras such as the Bavarian State Opera, the Frankfurt Opera and the Heilbronn Chamber Orchestra.
